Julie & I have decided to close the doors (so to speak) on Snowberry Creek Sample Boxes. We have enjoyed working with each of you and hope to stay in touch. We have shipped out the last of the samples in the boxes that left yesterday. If you have been sending us notices about your company's promotions, sales, etc. and want to continue to do so; that will be fine. I don't mind reposting them on our blog. Julie & I will be revamping the site and embarking on another venture together. We are opening Snowberry Creek Emporium. This site will feature our items and it will be a varied lot. lol

We promised in the beginning that the etailers would always have a link on our website and we will honor that promise. Is It An Honor or a Bother?

As most people know, Julie & I run Snowberry Creek together. We do live quite close to one another, but live in different counties. Actually, a river is the county line. Well, to my story or question.

Friday I call Julie on my cell to tell her my (mis)fortune. I had a call from a very nice gentleman informing me that I am to report to the Clark County Courthouse on Wed. morning at 9:00 for jury orientation and the trial will follow. My cell didn't have service at the time, so the nice gentleman just left the message. Wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gotten it? He didn't bother to call my house or ask for confirmation that the message was received. Would I have been in comtempt of court for not appearing?

As I've never served on the jury before, I was a little confused. I thought that you first report for jury selection before serving. Julie tells me she thinks the same and is very sympathic (in a best friend kinda way - lol). Although, she did receive a paper to fill out (at the same time I did) from her county. She is hoping that she's not called and so far it's looking pretty good.

I'm thinking the timing couldn't be worse as the hubs & I had a business trip planned to leave for Pendleton, OR on Sept. 22. I decided to call the Circuit Clerk's office to see if I could get a few more details. She informs me that it is for jury selection.....she says don't cancel your trip yet because you may not be selected (fingers crossed). Then she continues to fill me in....the trial is scheduled to last 7 days (well, if I'm selected...there goes the trip!) Oh, and you will be on the jury roster for the next THREE months.

Hmm....I'm wondering what kind of trial this is. I'll admit that I'm a bit curious to watch and observe the judical system at work. But then again, it seems to me that people are arrested, wait years to go to trial, taxpayers money is spent...hands slap or short sentence and back on the streets again for another go round. So my question is this, "Is it an honor or a bother to be selected to serve on the jury?" I cannot answer this question as I've never served but maybe someone that has can shed some light on the subject.

Oh- by the way, Julie received a call on SUNDAY morning at 9:00 am that she has to report in her county for jury selection on Thursday. She was on the phone with me at 9:01 to tell me her good fortune - LOL Aren't we just the lucky ones! :)

Summer is Heating Up!

Heating up is an understatement. Summer in Arkansas is HOT and humid! Makes us all look forward to those crisp, fall days...Julie & I just had a discussion on how the Eastern Seaboard is having a heat wave and the media is all atwitter. If California or the Western U.S. has a heat wave that too is a newsworthy event. We have many days of over 100° temps in Arkansas and it is very rarely newsworthy. Well, maybe if we have 15 or 20 days of 100° temps in a row...just maybe. I think the reason is that we are always hot in July & August so no one pays much attention to us. If you live in Arkansas, then you know that it will be HOT and it will be HUMID. My great-grandmother called those hot days "the dog days of summer".

This gets me to wondering why the old-timers called those hot, humid days in late July and August "dog days". Off to "Google" I went to see what I could find on this subject. The "dog days of summer" are the hottest, most sultry days of the year. Well, that certainly qualifies our days in Arkansas to be labeled as such!
The "dog days" usually occur between early July and early September. I found it interesting that "dog days" may be used to define a period that is very hot or stagnant or that is marked by a dull lack of progress. These are the days of the year when rainfall is at its lowest. I can definitely understand the lack of progress! It’s hard to move when you almost have a heatstroke from very little effort and you’re drenched from the humidity.

It is curious to note that the name was derived from an ancient belief that Sirius, also known as the Dog Star, was responsible for the hot weather. Once upon a time “dog days” were thought to be an evil time – “when the seas boiled – wine turned sour and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies” according to Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813.

To me “dog days” means hot & tired – so hot that it is almost impossible to catch your breath or move your feet. It’s when you pray that your air-conditioner doesn’t fail; you feel sorry for anyone that has to work outside; the grass has all turned brown and crunchy; any outdoor activity involves laying in a pool of water and drinking tall glasses of cold refreshments. Just simply too hot to do anything but lie around in the shade or better yet under the a/c while waiting on fall to arrive.
We are “smack dab” in the middle of the Dog Days, so while I’m waiting for them to pass - I’m dreaming of cool, crisp fall air!

Note: For those of you that have never heard the phrase “smack dab” – it’s another of my great-granny’s sayings - it means right there – directly, squarely.

I asked Becky for a few words of wisdom for anyone thinking of starting a business. I believe she is right on target.

My words of wisdom (by Becky) - If you are passionate about your business you will succeed. Always do something to put your business out there, whether it is 10 minutes or many hours. Building a business takes time and effort and just because you are self-employed doesn't mean you will have a lot of time on your hands. Being self-employed is usually harder than being employed as you have to have self discipline. There are many free advertising opportunities out there, but places that offer to send your samples out help you get your product out to many people for only the "cost" of what your samples cost you to make and postage...and will increase your chances of being noticed by a larger audience-people like to touch, feel, and smell (in my case) what you have to offer. This gives them a chance to do so, and not just a banner ad on a site-although that is helpful also.

Remember the pictures above are wax creations from Country Keepsakes....not real food. I know it is hard to believe as they look so real. They will look & smell great sitting around, but I bet they will fill the room with the most wonderul aroma while burning.

Soy!! It’s everywhere these days but what’s so great about it? I’m sure you’ve heard about the health benefits that adding soy to your diet can bring but did you know that soy is being used in candles? Soy candles are rapidly gaining in popularity due to the fact that they burn much cleaner than paraffin candles and therefore do not cause the respiratory problems in some people that paraffin candles can.

Interested in the Green movement for a better planet? Soy wax is made from soybeans grown right here in the USA and is the second largest grain crop we produce. As a renewable resource, the widening use of soybeans contributes to our society’s move away from fossil fuels and towards the reduction in greenhouse gases. Paraffin, on the other hand is a byproduct of petroleum. When crude oil is “mined” the paraffin is refined out as undesirable. After the refining process it is sold off to companies that use paraffin wax. The carbon in the paraffin is what leads to all that nasty black soot that you’ll see not only on your candle jars but also on the walls of your home. With soy you will have much less soot production and therefore much better air quality.

Soy candles not only burn cleaner than paraffin, they burn longer. 50% longer in fact! Soy burns slower and at a cooler temperature than paraffin creating a longer lasting product. This also aids in scent distribution which is why soy candles usually smell stronger than paraffin. The fact that it burns cooler also makes it safer for children and pets. I’m not suggesting pouring hot soy wax on yourself but in the event of an accident the consequences are less dire. Plus if you do spill liquid soy wax it cleans up easily with soap and water. Just try that with paraffin! Are you an animal lover or Vegan? Soy candles are also safe for you since soy wax is made exclusively from soybeans, no animal products are used.

So making the switch from paraffin to soy is a small step towards cleaner, healthier air in your home and a happier planet Earth!

Hope everyone’s year is off to a great start! We have many ideas for promoting our e-tailer’s products this year, along with offering giveaways on our blog. If you are a consumer rather than an e-tailer, this year will be a fantastic opportunity for you to find some new products or a new store. I do love finding new places to shop! I especially like supporting small business owners, as I feel they are the backbone of America.

For those of you not familiar with sample boxes…I will take a few moments to explain how they work. An e-tailer (someone who operates an online store) sends in samples or full-sized products that they wish to get into the hands of the consumer. We include these items in our monthly boxes (http://snowberrycreek.com) to market or promote their fantastic products. We offer many free promotional opportunities for our e-tailers on our blog. The minimum number of samples for a company to be included in the box is 10. This is a low minimum and you may send any number that you wish. Some people have inquired if all the products must be the same and I will assure you that you may send in a variety of your products or you may send all the same. It depends on what you wish to promote from your store. I would encourage you to take the time to make an appealing presentation with your products, as you wish to stand out & have the consumer notice your item.

Now as for the consumer, what is the advantage of a sample box? For me, the advantage is being able to “sample” products from stores I’ve never heard of or “sample” a new product from someone I have purchased from before. I have found many excellent products from our e-tailers and purchase from many of them. The sample box is a medium flat rate box packed full of products – you will receive a good variety of products and each box will have several full-sized items. The consumers (each month) are entered into the mystery prize drawing and a drawing for a free Snowberry Creek Sample Box (given away the next month).

If you wish to send in items to be included in the Sample Box, please remember the deadline is the 15th of each month. The box goes on sale the 25th of each month. We do not ever put the boxes off sale – if you purchase and we are out – we will let you know & you will be in line to receive one when more products arrive. This lets us keep our e-tailers products flowing out to the public on a continuous basis. As products arrive all month long – we are able to keep boxes going out to the consumer very quickly. Very rarely will we be completely out of products. Most times your box will ship out the next day after you order, with a delivery of 2-3 days. Shipping is included in the price of the box. We do ship internationally & we charge the actual shipping costs of the box.

We do not keep samples for our own pleasure as this is not what they were sent to us for. We only try an e-tailers product if they specifically tell us that they are sending us something to try. All products are shipped out to the consumer. Consumers may order with confidence as we have never had a box lost by USPS.

To our potential e-tailers: we promise to promote you to our utmost ability with the only cost to you being the cost of your samples. Please note that the e-tailers participating in the February Box (samples due by Feb. 15th, but may be sent in anytime after Jan. 16th to qualify) will be entered into a drawing for a $25 Wal-Mart Gift Card.

Ye Olde Chandler "Fall Crock" Giveaway

The signs of fall...crisp, cool air; pumpkins for sale; turning leaves; pumpkin pie baking in the oven; thoughts of Thanksgiving. I'm sure you can add to this list. If you're wanting a bit of fall in your house - enter this free giveaway for one of Ye Olde Chandler's fall crocks. The crock is very nice - it is beige/brown with some green, yellow & orange. The flash makes the crock look white - it is mostly beige with brown accents. It is a glass crock decorated with leaves, pumpkins and acorns. The scent is vanilla spice and I can tell you that it smells very good (wish I could smell it burning...maybe I could just a little and the winner wouldn't notice! lol)

I purchased a fall crock from Ye Olde Chandler as part of a birthday present for my oldest daughter. She loves it! And her house smells sooooo good...pumpkin spice wafting through the air - makes me want to dash to the truck and speed home to bake a pumpkin pie! Well, actually my mom makes the best pumpkin pie...maybe I'll talk her into it.

The holidays are just around the corner. Have you already been thinking about decorations? It's not too soon to start, if you like handcrafted decorations. You must allow time for them to be crafted and shipped. I know, we all have the tendency to wait until the last minute. What's Your Favorite

I was thinking today of my favorite bath and body item. That got me to wondering what everyone else likes. You may tell what item is your favorite and why, if you want. You may even tell who makes your favorite product. Is it your product...do you make your favorite bath and body product? If so, go ahead...toot your own horn!

My favorite bath and body product is a bar of rich lathering, creamy handmade cold-process soap. I'm cold-process challenged, so I really appreciate the people that make these kinds of soap. Actually, I've never tried to make a bar and can't seem to find the time. But, knowing me....I might blow up the kitchen. lol

As to my favorite e-tailer who makes cold-process soaps....well, I don't have just one favorite so I won't list them. I've tried soaps from many of our e-tailers and I haven't gotten a bad bar yet. They are all very talented soapmakers!

Okay, tell me what you like, why and who makes it. I may want to try out their product.

I know the question is....Do I have to be an e-tailer or customer to post my favorite product(s)? The answer is no. Of course, we would love to have you as an e-tailer or a customer, but it is not required here to tout your favorite. Go ahead...let us know your favorite product, store, etc. and why. We are introducing one of our newest e-tailers ~ Karina of Soap That Makes Scents. She has some fantastic products. You will get to know Karina by reading her interview. How or why did you start your business? When I moved from Canada to the United States in 2004, it wasn't legal for me to work, but I still wanted to contribute to my family. I had been making and selling soap since 2001 and was able to continue that while the paperwork was processed to allow me to work in the U.S. Our daughter (who is now almost three) was born soon thereafter and I didn't want her to be in daycare, so I decided to stay home and raise her--Soap That Makes Scents went full time in 2006.

What kind of products do you carry or make? Soap That Makes Scents offers a lovely variety of handcrafted bath items including a vegetarian soap line, shea butter lip balms, and body souffle

What do you listen to or watch while you work? If I'm on the computer, I constantly have YouTube videos playing in the background..mostly Bon Jovi (yup, they are still rockin' out with new music!) or Richard Marx

Do you have a special or certain way you like to begin your day? Well, I'm a work at home mom, so first thing is to make sure my toddler is fed, and then while she's quietly playing I check my online sales and update my shop where needed. After that, I answer all waiting emails/convos, and then go over my To-Do List for the day..normally soap and heavy computer work (like label design) is created during my daughter's nap time; wrapping/cutting/labelling when she's up and about.

What do you do to unwind and relax? When I have the time, I love to read. I devour books in just a few days or so. Right now I'm reading the TruBlood saga (8 books in total--the 9th out this year), which is now a television series on HBO.

Do you have a storefront, sell strictly on-line or both? I sell online, as well as at craftshows and homeshow events.

What or who inspires you? What really gets me going the most are scents...fragrances invoke memories and mindsets. Think about what the smell of sugar cookies fresh from the oven means to you, or the scent of coconut--perhaps it reminds you of your last tropical vacation. That's what I want to capture. I want to offer a slice of your life in every bar.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own business? Promote like there's no tomorrow! No one will know about you or the great products you offer unless you tell them about it--and often.

Battle with the New PC

The old pc was clanging and making all kinds of strange noises! I call Julie in a panic and tell her to "listen". Her first words were, "You better back up everything you want". Those are words of the wise. Julie is much more knowledgeable about purchasing a new pc and went directly to Dell.com to help me make a selection.

Luckily, Dell was having a sale and I made a purchase. I anxiously awaited the arrival on my new pc, all the while hoping that the old one would hold together until that day. The last day was up for grabs! It made all kinds of weird noises, took forever to load, froze between windows and ran very slowly. The new pc was delivered and I rushed to call Julie! It arrived!

I quickly took the old pc down and moved it over out of the way. I unboxed the new pc, set it up and powered it on. It looks great! A widescreen monitor, no wheezing and clanging, quickly loads and doesn't freeze between windows! I'm uptown! I think this is a breeze...the quickest, easiest setup ever! Then reality sets in...it's Vista and I don't know where things are. The software I try to load won't work. I need new picture editing software as Picture It 2002 and Paint Shop Pro won't work (or my versions won't). I load the software I have that is compatible, tranfer my files from the external hard drive. Now, I decide to look for some of the files....where are they? I can see them in windows explorer but when I look in my documents...they aren't there. Strange! I click on Pictures...there's some of my pictures but not all of them. Then I notice that Pictures has a folder within it called My Pictures and there are some more of my pics. I didn't make a My Pictures folder in Pictures. Okay, I try to be positive. I like the pc and I will adjust. I can't use Outlook Express!!!! OMG I must use Windows Live and it pulls all of my emails from all accounts into it. It's all jumbled together! More calls to Julie for support! Well, I decide the Windows Live mail might not be too bad...I can email from all of the accounts without actually switching to the account. Hmmmm....interesting.

I'm still adjusting. I thought changing from Office 2003 to Office 2007 was a pain. This takes the cake! I did adjust to that change...now I can find most of the options and features that I need and use. So, I'm sure in time I will love Vista...I just need to get use to the change. It must have features that I will love. lol

If anyone has any tips, advice or words of comfort - please don't hestitate to leave them for me. :)

What Is This Tea Called "ROOIBOS"?

How would you feel about drinking a tea that is naturally caffeine-free, low in tannins and known to prevent age-related oxidation of the the brain? Sounds too good to be real? Well, it's not!
The beverage is called Rooibos (pronounced Roy Boss) and it comes from the Aspalathus Linoraris plant which is grown in the rich, very fertile area of the Cederberg Mountains in the Western Cape of South Africa.
It is harvested from the needle-like leaves and stems of the plant. The leaves are harvested in the summer and oxidized giving the tea a distinctive reddish-brown color. Hence, it is often called "Red Bush."
After it's initial discovery generations of South Africans simply enjoyed it for its sweet, refreshing taste.
In 1772 it was re-discovered by botanist Carl Humberg, who brought it back as a beverage.
In 1904 a Russian immigrant named Benjamin Ginsberg realized Rooibos' untapped marketing potential and began to offer it globally. It was then called "Mountain Tea."
But it wasn't until decades later that Rooibos teas' real success began. In 1968, South African mother Annique Theron fortuitously stumbled across Rooibos for her baby, releiving the infants colic and insomnia.
In 1970 she published her findings in "Allergies: An Amazing Discovery" and with that publication Rooibos became famous world-wide.
But what can Rooibos do for me???
Benefit #1: Naturally caffeine-free. .

Benefit #2: Soothes your skin. Rooibos has a soothing effect on the skin. Use a weak solution applied topically as a face wash or use to soothe sunburned skin. Toss some tea bags in your bath. The combination of naturally occurring phenolic carboxylic acids (antibacterial & antfungal properties) combined with alpha hydroxyl acids help revive skin. For infants, use as relief for diaper rash.. Apply topically with a clean cotton ball to the rash at every diaper change. Put used Rooibos tea bags in the refrigerator or freezer. After a hard day's work put on tired or red eyes to soothe and realax.

Benefit #3: Contains no oxalic acid. People who are suffering from kidney stones can safely drink Rooibos.

Benefit #4: Use after workouts. Rooibos is popular among athletes after they work out as it is a rich source of vital minerals and Vitamin C which are depleted during workouts When used as fluid replacement, it is said to provide measurable amounts of minerals and electrolytes. For this reason, Rooibis is used by South African athletes as a sports drink. It is especially thirst quenching and refreshing during the hot humid months of summer.

Benefit #5: Stronger teeth. Rooibos helps give you strong teeth and bones because of its calcium, manganeze and flouride content.

Benefit #6: Stress Relief. Have a cup of Rooibos before bed to ensure a good night's sleep. It helps with insomnia, disturbed sleeping patterns and headaches. It contains no caffeine and has a relaxing and soothing effect on the central nervous system.

Benefit #7: Polyphenols and Antioxidants. Rooibos contains significant amounts of polyphenol antioxidants, including flavonoids and phenolic acids. These antioxidants play an important role in preventing age-related oxidative damage as well as damage caused by free radicals. Green Rooibos is said to have 10 times more Aspalatin, which is a flavanoid found only in Rooibos.

Benefit #8: Easy on your system. Rooibos is completely safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as young children. It can be enjoyed regularly and freely. It is 100% caffeine free, calorie free and is a healthy alternative to other teas, coffees and alcohol. It is also extremely effective in combatting iron depletion during preganancy and breastfeeding as it contains no tannins which affect iron absorption.

How to Make an Enjoyable Cup of Rooibos

Pour boiling water over the leaves and steep as long as you wish--up to 10 minutes. The longer steeping time will result in higher antioxidant activity. Unlike real tea, Rooibos never grows bitter from over-steeping and unlike most herbals Rooibos will never become tart from over steeping.
Rooibos is very verasatile--drink it hot or cold, with or without milk, sugar and honey. Add lemon or mix with fruit juices for a lovely blend.
Rooibis tea is also used in cooking and baking. It can replace the liquid content in recipes for soups, marinades, sauces, bread and cakes for added flavor and nutrition.
Rooibos can be stored for long periods of time without "aftertaste" buildup because of its low tannin content.
It makes a great iced tea.

It is clear that tea, the world's most popular non-alcoholic drink, should be a part of your healthy recipe for healthy living. Now that you are aware of many of the healing and therapeutic benefits of Rooibos, I hope you will join me in raising your tea cup in a toast to good health!!! You should consult your own physician about the health benefits for you.

I am truly blessed in the luck department. I love surprises! Well, good ones anyway. When Ye Olde Chandler's box arrived, I opened it and sniffed everything. Their candles always smell sooooo good!

I was surprised to find 2 gold organza bags tucked into the box - each had a card enclosed; one with my name and one with Julie's. I was touched and my heart warmed by Faye & Lesli's kindness. I grabbed my bag out and sniffed it really good!

Inside the gold oraganza bag was a soap! I loooove soaps! I'm not talking about any old soap, but a classy looking soap. I will send you to their site to read all about the embossed Fleur-di-lis. I Was Lucky!!!

I'm always looking around, visiting blogs, entering contests...sometimes I get lucky but oft times not. It was my lucky day when I went by Kim's Thoughts of Beauty Blog. Kim is the owner of Overall Beauty. I stopped in to read her very informative blog and she was reviewing a new company she had found, Natural Empathy. What is Our Goal?

We started Snowberry Creek Sample Boxes to promote our businesess, along with any others who wish to participate. We've had a great time doing it and will continue on. We think we have been successful in reaching our goals. I cannot speak for each of the e-tailers who have participated, but Julie and I each own businesses and we participate each month. We have seen an increase in our sales and the volume of traffic to our sites. Many of the e-tailers have told me they have noticed an increase in sales and traffic volume, too.

Now, I know you are wondering why I am going into all of this. Well, I'll tell you. Today I was thinking about the sample box business and how many people are in that business. That's great...I think there is room for everyone and everyone has there own reasons for doing it. Then, I begin to think about our reasons. It was not to get rich. LOL Good thing, we didn't go into it for that because we have put more time and effort in this business than we will ever make. Not to complain, because it is paying off for both of us in our main businesses and that is our goal. To promote ALL of our e-tailers, along with ourselves.

Here's a list of our goals from the beginning:

1. To promote small independent business owners.
2. To help generate more traffic to their websites.
3. To provide the consumers with products they may never have heard of before.
4. Offer a box full of samples each month.
6. Provide the consumer a low-cost way to try many different products.
5. Try to come up with various ways to help the website owners promote their products without charging them extra money for our efforts.
6. Get our e-tailers more visibility on the internet.

The samples in our boxes do not arrive at your door all fancied up in pretty packaging, bows, bags, etc. Our boxes will arrive as a USPS Flat Rate (11x8-1/2x5-1/2) Postal Box full of fabulous samples (there will be some packaging to help insulate the samples). The price of our box includes the $9.85 for shipping. We charge actual shipping costs and do not have any handling charges. What we do provide is a no cost (except for their samples) way for our e-tailers to get their products seen, heard about and into the hands of consumers. We want everyone to get a chance to try their products.

We do value our time, but we feel this is a worthwhile cause - the promotion of small business owners who are just starting out or struggling to get recognition for their products.

Thanks to all of the e-tailers who have participated and sent in their creative, fabulous, fantastic products. We will continue to promote you to our utmost ability.

I, personally, have found some new places to shop. Hope you will visit some of the e-tailers websites and try out some of their products. I have received great products, excellent customer service and very timely shipping. I have not been disappointed in any of my purchases.

Our goal was never to make a fortune off of other people's samples and we have met that goal.

Salt Soap Bar by A Woman With Scents

I really didn't know what to expect out of a salt soap bar as I had never heard of one, much less tried one. I was excited to receive my package of soaps from Carol of A Woman With Scents, as I have tried her soaps before and found them to be of great quality.

Before I tell you my opinion of the salt soap bar, I would like to tell you a little about one just in case you are like me and haven't heard of them. The salt soap bar or spa bar is made by combining natural oils and minerals along with fragrance. Some people claim that it is so moisturizing that you have no need to use lotion afterwards. I was thinking....we shall see.

The box arrived, I ripped it open and loved the way the spa bar, which was scented Tranquil Waters smelled. Just right...not too strong and not too light. I was thinking, I can't wait to try this soap out! I was very pleasantly surprised by my salt/spa bar. Great lather, just the right scent and it didn't feel scratchy while using it. Afterwards, my skin felt so silky smooth and I didn't use any lotion. I thought, I must try this again tomorrow. I did, with the same results.

I read up and it seems that the salt creates a moisturing bar of soap. Now, that doesn't seem possible. But, it is. I don't know how it works, but it does. The salt bar gently exfoliates the dead skin cells and leaves your skin feeling silky smooth.
